MUSHROOM
AA002

On Aug 9, 2019, Counting Crows played their penultimate gig (before the pandemic shut things down for a couple years) at the Outside Lands Festival, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. While the cymbals were still ringing from the last song of our late afternoon set, my guitar tech, Manny, handed me a guitar. I jumped into a golf cart and was shuttled to the edge of the park where I hopped into a cab and sped to the Make Out Room on the other side of town (Mission District). Strapping on the guitar during the lightspeed cab ride, I walked directly onstage, where Mushroom was already set up and ready to go. This insane set of freewheeling music sprang forth like Athena from the head of Zeus! I’d been playing with the ever shape shifting improv collective Mushroom for a couple of years down in LA, but this was a special line up anniversary show with several original members who hadn’t played together in more than a decade. As usual, no pre-organized material, no rehearsals…just raw unabandoned creativity! Luckily, the tapes were rolling, and after the fact, Mushroom mainspring Pat Thomas and I decided we better put this thing out! - DI
